Clinical chemistry is the area of chemistry that is generally concerned with the quantitative analysis of components of bodily fluids. The most common specimens used in clinical Chemistry are blood and urine. Blood analysis is one of the quickest and most affordable types of laboratory testing available. Blood testing allows physicians the ability to quickly check a patient’s overall health regarding their organ functionality, vitamin, and immune levels, as well as concerns regarding various types of diseases. Blood work consists of multiple panels that check for specific components in your blood, including but not limited to electrolytes, hormones, and particular proteins.

The frequency of your blood work varies per person at the discretion of your health care provider. Blood tests are ordered by your doctor for three primary reasons:

• Routine Physical Examination: Your provider might recommend a routine blood test at your yearly general physical examination. This allows the doctor the ability to look closer at your body’s function levels as well as the chance to catch any warning signs for several medical conditions.
• Medical Conditions: Your provider might recommend frequent blood tests to monitor your health if you have a complex medical history or have been diagnosed with conditions like diabetes, obesity, heart disease, hypertension, liver, or kidney disease. These blood tests typically range every 3 to 6 months.
• Appearance of New Symptoms: A doctor’s appointment should be made if you experience the onset of symptoms like shortness of breath, fatigue, an increased frequency of urination, or swelling in the legs or face. A doctor will prescribe additional blood tests to make a detailed assessment to make a diagnosis.

Talk to your healthcare provider if you require special preparation to improve the accuracy of your tests. This may involve:

• Fasting
• Drinking more or less water than usual
• Avoid certain medications, vitamins, or supplements before testing. Talk to your healthcare provider before making changes and before having your blood drawn.
• Avoid chewing gum, smoking, or exercising.

If your test requires fasting, you are not able to:

• Eat or Drink anything other than water for 8-12 hours prior to testing
• Do not drink juice, coffee, or other beverages

• Lipid Panel (Total Cholesterol, Low-Density Cholesterol, High-Density Cholesterol, and Triglycerides)

You can eat or drink as soon as your test is over. Feel free to bring a snack with you.
